Missions is ministry which fulfills the Great Commission of making disciples by proclaiming the gospel and Word of Jesus Christ to nations. The church will accomplish this through evangelism, discipleship, Bible translation, church planting and church leadership development. Great attention will be given to those who are least reached. A variety of strategies will be used to serve God's plan for making disciples.
We are a church on mission to make disciples. That mission is founded in the Gospel that has gripped us, and constrains us to share it with others. It is something we believe, something we live, and something we proclaim. Scripture is pretty clear that this is what we are to be about, both individually and as a church. There are 3 key passages that help shape our mission.
Matthew 28: 18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Matthew 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”
It is clear that we have been commanded to share the Gospel throughout the world. Scripture tells us, that we are to go make disciples, to be a witness, to teach and to baptize. Radford is committed to fulfilling the Great Commission in Jerusalem (Smith Mountain Lake Area), Judea (State of Virginia), Samaria (Throughout the USA), and to the end of the earth (All The Nations/People Groups). This task is being accomplished through prayer, financial support of individual missionaries and the SBC Cooperative Program, and through the sending of short-term and long-term missionaries. This ongoing endeavor is our missions focus.
